THE FERMO AREA

The vocation of Fermo, for its history as a city of studies and for its tradition as a center of cultural exchanges in the Adriatic, has always been aimed at welcome and hospitality. The tools available to the City to continue responding to this trend are multiple and have consolidated and refined over time. First, the culture. Fermo retains an intact Renaissance urban layout which, starting from the main Piazza del Popolo - one of the most beautiful in the Marche - can be enjoyed through a series of itineraries dotted with churches, noble palaces, courtyards and artistic portals.

It offers a picture gallery full of late Gothic tables and famous for the famous "Adoration of the Shepherds" by P.P. Rubens; it houses one of the most famous libraries in Italy for its ancient book heritage, whose heart - the seventeenth-century Sala del Mappamondo - is the pride of the city.

It houses a complex underground water system which includes the Roman cisterns of the Augustan period (the largest built by the Romans by extension in square meters), whose visit is essential for anyone who comes to the city even for a few hours.

The Diocesan Museum, annexed to the splendid Cathedral with a Gothic facade, which preserves, among other pieces of excellence, the chasuble by Thomas Becket, enriches the city's museum offer; the Picena Archaeological Section of Palazzo dei Priori, which fully testifies one of the great pre-Roman Italic civilizations through unique bronze artifacts; the Oratory of Santa Monica, with a cycle of late Gothic frescoes among the most popular in the Marche.

The Scientific Museums are located in the seventeenth-century Palazzo Paccaroni, in Corso Cavour: the Polar Museum "Silvio Zavatti" unique in Italy and the "Tommaso Salvadori" Museum of Natural Sciences. A little further on, the Church of San Filippo Neri, the second Philippine foundation in the Marche region of the 17th century, thanks to the recent restoration has now become an Auditorium and exhibition hall, which hosts numerous conferences and exhibitions.

A place of excellence deserves, in the Fermo cultural offer, the eighteenth-century Teatro Comunale dell'Aquila, among the most beautiful and largest in the Marche: a prestigious environment, enriched by the historical backdrops of Alessandro Sanquirico and the central fresco by Luigi Cochetti. The structure, in addition to representing one of the most appreciated cultural assets of the city, is the site of important seasons of show: opera, symphonic, prose, according to a centuries-old tradition that has seen its scenes trodden by the biggest names on the international scene. The prestigious nineteenth-century Villa Vitali, designed by the architect Gaetano Manfredi, houses the renovated open-air theater, marking a significant part of the summer theater season.

Another strong point of Fermo and its hamlets is the landscape. Perched around the Girfalco hill, whose park is home to centuries-old trees and constitutes one of the most beautiful panoramic terraces of the Marche coast, the city has as its natural backdrop, on one side the Adriatic Sea, only eight kilometers from the urban center, from the another the suggestive scenery of a hinterland of typical towns that go with a gentle hilly landscape up to the slopes of the "blue mountains" of Leopardi's memory, the Sibillini. This privileged position means that Fermo offers a clean sea and well-equipped beaches on which to practice sailing, wind surfing and kitesurfing, such as at Lido di Fermo, in Casabianca, in Marina Palmense; it also allows tourists to enjoy the tranquility of the hinterland in farmhouses and facilities equipped for trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding, and is a natural gateway to the nearby Monti Sibillini Park. The numerous accommodation activities offer adequate solutions for all needs. From Fermo, moreover, considering the particular local production structure based on small and medium-sized enterprises, interesting and particularly refined paths are possible between company outlets of big names and craft traditions where shoes, hats, accessories and clothing make fashion and trend in the major international boutiques.

RESTAURANTS

The Marche is centrally located on the Italian east coast, nestled between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Autumn in the Marche

THE SCENT OF HARVEST

Especially in the first part of autumn, the scents of the harvest invade the hills of the Marche. With the must are made the typical soft donuts that can be found in many local pastry shops, must biscuits, perfect to serve with "vino cotto" (literally "cooked wine") and "sughetti" (a sort of polenta made from must, corn and nuts). When the must is cooked for a long time, sapa is produced: it is a sweet and sticky ingredient perfect for seasoning polenta and making cavallucci (typical local biscuit). The sughitti festival takes place in the last week of September in Montecassiano. At the beginning of October, the oldest Grape Festival in Italy is held in Cupramontana: it is a party with food, music, dancing and, of course, Sir Wine.

HARVEST OF OLIVES AND OLIVE OIL

One of the most magical moments in the Marche, and in Italy in general, takes place at the end of October / beginning of November: this is the month of the olive harvest, when you will see many people working around the olive trees to collect the precious fruit. Do not hesitate: the new oil, with an intense green color, is immediately ready to be tasted and purchased. If you have friends who have a farmhouse in the countryside with an olive grove, ask them to invite you for the harvest: it will be a nice moment to share with your friends and then you can bring the olives to the mill and watch the production of your olive oil.

THE FOLIAGE OF THE CANFAITO BEECH FOREST

If you want to experience colors, then you can't miss the Canfaito beech forest: every year you can enjoy the same and always different spectacle of the beech leaves that change color. You will feel like under a golden dome made of yellow, orange and red leaves. Enjoy a relaxing walk under the beech trees and don't forget to stop in Elcito, a tiny unspoilt village, where you can breathe an atmosphere of other times, when the shepherds woke up at dawn, spent the whole day out with their animals, eager to go home and find some warmth by the fireplace with their families.

MEDIEVAL VILLAGES

Visiting the numerous medieval villages scattered around the Marche can be a real challenge under the August sun, but doing it in autumn, when the air is still warm and the sun illuminates the stones that make up the city walls, has a totally different charm. Stroll through the narrow streets of the Marchigiano towns, where a beautiful panorama awaits you at every corner. Difficult to recommend a village: just switch off your satellite navigator, follow a less traveled road and certainly you will find a quiet and nice village waiting to welcome you.

CHESTNUT FESTIVAL

The good and sweet smell of roasted chestnuts is one of the nicest in autumn. You can go yourself to look for chestunts and then cook them at your place or, if you are not sporty enough, there are many chestnut festivals in October, especially in the Sibillini area, where people roast chestunts along the roads and you can buy a cone. The most famous chestnut festivals in Marche are in Smerillo and Montemonaco. Smerillo is particularly famous also for being one of the balconies of Marche: thanks to its elevated position, you can admire wide open views, stretching from the Sibillini mountains to the sea, passing through the rolling hills and medieval villages.

TRUFFEL

Autumn also offers another delicious, sought-after and highly appreciated product: truffles. Two are the most important events in Marche dedicated to truffles: the National Fair of White Truffle in Acqualagna and Diamanti a Tavola in Amandola, dedicated to the precious white truffles of the Sibillini. The most famous chestnut festivals in Marche are in Smerillo and Montemonaco. Smerillo is particularly famous also for being one of the balconies of Marche: thanks to its elevated position, you can admire wide open views, stretching from the Sibillini mountains to the sea, passing through the rolling hills and medieval villages.

THE CONERO AREA IN PEACE

Ok the temperature is not suitable for a swim but the Conero without the crowds of summer allows you to make many experiences, from cycling to walking (we especially recommend two trips: the viewpoint up to Passo del Lupo, and that from the Belvedere) as well as visiting the villages of Sirolo and Numana.

Traveling in the Marche

AIRPORTS
The main transport hub of the Marche is the Adriatic port city of Ancona. International flights serve the Marche airport just northwest of the city, while ferries sail to and from destinations in Greece, Croatia and Albania.

PRIVATE CAR
You must be a good driver in the Marche; the streets are narrow and often steep. Fly to Ancona and rent a car. For speed, take the A14, which connects the entire region along its 111 miles of coastline, from Pesaro in the north to Ascoli Piceno in the south. For pleasure, drive along the state roads through the beautiful landscapes of the Marche.

TRAINS
Once in the region, trains run along the coast and buses serve most of the inland towns and villages. Realistically though, you'll want your wheels to explore the region's verdant hinterland. Car rental service is available at the Marche airport and Ancona railway station. Travel in the Marche

Het indrukwekkende Sferisterio di Macerata is een gigantisch openlucht stadion in Macerata, De Marken, waar de oude Italiaanse sport Pallone col Bracciale ooit werd beoefend!

Verblijf in een schitterend vakantiehuis in De Marken en bezoek de Sferisterio di Macerata, en de vele andere, geweldige bezienswaardigheden in de omgeving!

De oude Italiaanse nationale sport Pallone col Bracciale werd bijna vijf eeuwen lang beoefend, en stamt uit de 15e eeuw.

De sport vertakte zich tot verschillende variaties, maar allen gebruikten oorspronkelijk een kleine bal genaamd 'Pallone'. Het moderne Engelse woord 'balloon' stamt van dit woord af.

De bal werd heen en weer gegooid tussen de teams met behulp van een cilindervormige uitrusting die op de voorarm werd gedragen, en die de naam 'Bracciale' had. Het puntensysteem werkte met 10 en 15 punten, gelijk aan het tennis puntensysteem: 15 - 30 - 40 - 50. Twaalf overwinningen op rij leverde de winst van de wedstrijd op.
